Jakarta Post 19 April 2001 JAKARTA (JP): Patimurra Military Commander Brig. Gen. I Made Yasa hinted on Wednesday that the military elite's Joint Battalion I might be withdrawn from restive Maluku province in May, Antara reported. General Yasa said that the pull out of troops from the strife-torn islands would be conducted "based on conditions on the field and development of the security situation in Maluku." "As planned, the withdrawal of non-local troops would be conducted in May at the earliest. And I think the most likely to come home soon would be Joint Battalion I," Yasa said. The joint battalion, popularly known as Yongab, is a crack-riot troop squad comprising three elite military units, namely the Navy's Marines, Army's Kopassus and Air Force's Paskhas. There are currently two joint battalions stationed in Maluku. The first joint battalion is known for the arrest of 14 police and military officers involved in a rogue shooting at Hotel Wijaya II in Ambon during a three-day fray marking the second year of bloody conflicts in the Malukus on Jan. 19, 2001. The defiant officers were nabbed in a military raid on Jan. 21. think they deserve a break," Yasa added. There are currently 15.5 military battalions stationed in Maluku and North Maluku. In two years of bloody communal conflict in the Malukus some 8,000 people have been killed and thousands of others forced to flee. (edt)
