The Staff at VirtuaPern and the former Benden Weyr@VP have consulted with Ms. Anne McCaffrey about the situation concerning the name of the Weyr and her copyright restrictions. Matters have already been addressed and the name has been changed to Bahrain Weyr as a temporary fix. The physical location of the Weyr and it's history remains unchanged, but the name has been altered throughout VirtuaPern's database. Plans for Bahrain Weyr to eventually move to Xanadu Weyr located on the Southern Continent are already in progress for VirtuaPern's new database. Thank you for your patience.

Excerpt from Jody Lynn Nye's Dragonlover's Guide to Pern

Benden Weyr lies on the far east side of the Northern Continent, embedded in the mountain chain. Formed by nature into a double crater, with the immense vaulted cavern big enough for a half-dozen queens to clutch in, it was considered an ideal site for a Weyr. The natural formations were left as is, merely smoothing out the roughness, but Benden retains the same 'feel' as do the oldest Holds and Weyrs.

While honor and duty are the stood by traditions of Benden Weyr, an easy camaraderie and ambiance is commonly found. One of the special tricks of Bendenites is prestidigitation, or slight of hand. The secrets are revealed to none outside the weyr, though riders are forbidden to use the skill to turn a profit; instead, they amuse and befuddle those who cannot see the trick.

Bahrain Weyr's "Official" History

The history of this Weyr is that of Benden Weyr, for that was indeed what it was first called for over 2 millenia. The second Weyr to be inhabited, it held it's own traditions and prestige for generations until the fateful Ninth Pass where it truly entered history as more than a location. After the erradication of Thread, life in the Weyr settled down to a dull murmur, with rarely the occassional disaster or joyous event to sparken the energy within it.

So it was during the celebration of the 3rd Millenium that the Weyrleader of Benden, V'lin of bronze [] decided to once again bring attention to dragonkind by renaming the Weyr after one of the orbiting colony ships forming the Dawn Sisters: Bahrain. He wished to revitalize the Weyr against the demoralization of the decreasing dragon population and to celebrate the anniversary of Landing, believing that the great ships did far more for Pern than just one single man who captained them. Despite the change, the riders continued to fall into disfavor and most folk, riders included, still call it Benden.

Time continued to pass, another 150 turns or so. The Weyrs had all but dwindled to leave but Fort Weyr and Bahrain. For a generation, the riders worried as the number of queens dropped till only the Tillek native Jehana's Pinnath was left. Her last clutch brought a good sized clutch, but sadly no gold. So when she failed to rise to mate the following season, the Bahrain riders went to Fort Weyr to beseech them for aid. Valora's golden Isoldeth had only recently begat Fabrinath who was paired with the Ruathan born Sabria. Though protesting the sudden thrust into such responsibility, the two knew their duty to dragonkind as well as to their own Weyr. Thus as Fabrinath rose to her first mating flight, bronze riders from both Weyrs flew to catch her. But it was the Fortian K'neda and Wakaremath who won and became the new Weyrleader and cementing Sabria's position as Weyrwoman.

Things looked promising at first, the resulting clutch already producing another queen, Sirikith who impressed the Telgar raised Kalanthe. For many turns there were no other queens, but under K'neda's and Sabria's leadership Bahrain continued to prosper none the less. Then came Elisandra's fiery Zivath and a rising number in the dragon population of the Weyr. However things didn't stay peaceful between the two willful leaders and thus when Wakaremath finally lost to the native weyrbred D'karon's bronze Sahrinth, K'neda returned to Fort. Murmurings about large clutches continued to plague the ears of the riders as Zivath's own daughter Aerinth paired to Lemos herder, Muireann. For a while, things were again quiet at Bahrain... but the queens are restless and the gossips believe that there is much more to come from that mountainous Bahrain Weyr.

Then things became even more interesting as the largest clutch of dragon eggs was laid. Or rather clutches for all four of Bahrain's queens had risen and mated in a short period of time and clutched on the spacious cavern of the Hatching Grounds. All of Pern was asked for help in searching for sufficient candidates and foodstuffs to feed so many new hungry mouths and in the end 122 new additions were added to the Weyr! Crowded as never before, the Weyrwoman looked to the last unclaimed regions of the Southern Lands for respite...

The Great Debate!

Thanks for everyone who pitched in to help decide this rather important issue, but the matter is now resolved! Bahrain will be moving to the new Xanadu Weyr location this summer when VirtuaPern opens it's new database. For more information about Xanadu Weyr, you can still visit the information page until I redo this whole page when the move is completed.
