Kung Fu

Let me begin this page by laying down a disclaimer... I am not, nor will I be in the near future a master. I say this because some people ask me questions as though I know. My homepage is just for FUN.

I have been learning the Chu Ka Tong Long (Chu Family Praying Mantis) system off and on for about 2 years now.

Chu Ka (or Chu Gar pending pronunciation) Kung Fu is what is known as a "complete system." It has the standard fighting and then it has: ground boxing, Chin-Na, Sciou Jiou (spelling is off... Chinese Wrestling, which is very mean), and aerial fighting. The ground boxing and Chinese Wrestling can be and are systems in of their own but most Chu Ka practitioners are often required to learn these skills as well. Chu Ka is a in-close fighting system (within 3 feet).

Our motto is often, "Sallow 'em in, chew 'em up and spit 'em out."

It is a very deadly style made strictly for fighting. With that said, we also have another saying; "I do not attack unless you attack, and if you attack I attack first."

It is also not a very fancy style, in fact most southern Kung Fu styles aren't. Northern styles, like Northern Praying Mantis has the long showy type movements (course they're still effective, don't get me wrong). We are taught to respect others and other styles. Fighting is the last resort.

Southern Praying Mantis was originally developed by the royal family. When the Manchurians invaded, the royal family was forced to flee to a northern Shaolin temple. They were found and the temple was burned so the family was forced to hide in a southern Shaolin temple. At the time Northern Praying Mantis was extremely popular, so they changed the name to Southern Praying Mantis to trick the Manchurians since they were looking for people who studied the royal family's style. They were discovered again thereby causing the southern temple to face the same fate the northern did. After that the style was only taught to the Hakka. I believe Hakka translates into outsiders and basically means those who have had to start again. Since that time Chu Ka was only taught to Hakka descendents. It has only been till recently that it has been taught to non-Hakka people. We call it Chu Ka in remembrance of those who helped the family out.

I am learning from Sifu Manuel Rodriguez at the Red Dragon School of Chinese Kung Fu. Since Sifu lives in Ventura, California; I am currently studying under his senior student Bruce Liu. Sifu comes to town about 4 to 5 times a year to teach us new stuff, correct what we are doing, and to keep the Kung Fu brothership going.

We were training to go to the World Cup of Kung Fu in Budapest, Hungry  in 1999, but problems in nearby countries kept us from attending. We may yet attend the World Cup of Kung Fu, but I know I need to train a lot harder if we are to attend.

Training in this style and training with our other Kung Fu brothers, which is a Hung Gar school, I have developed a great appreciation for the Arts and love to see various styles.
