"Ah, buyog!"
Abuyog is a coastal town located in the eastern part of Leyte.  It is sorrounded by the Leyte Gulf on one side and bound by the Bito and Cadac-an  Rivers on the other. Tropical rainforests, lush vegetation and wide mountain ranges border the town in the western and southern parts.

During the Spanish occupation, Spanish sailors went ashore what is now known as Bito River.  They were greeted by the natives and a swarm of bees.  When the Spaniards asked the natives what the name of the place was, the natives replied "Ah, buyog" thinking that the sailors were asking what the flying creatures were.  Thus, our place was named "Ah, buyog"  which became "Abuyog" as time passed by.

Today's Abuyog
Coming from Tacloban, the one major establishment that makes you aware you are in Abuyog is the Abuyog General Hospital.  Actually, the cockpit locally known as "bulangan" comes first but one would hardly notice it unless it is a Sunday because of the usually noisy but controlled chaos emanating from the raucous crowd that patronizes the event.  The next major establishment is the   B. V. Closa Elementary School.  The Lopez Owned Abuyog Academy, the alma mater of countless Abuyognons is an imposing piece of architecture in Bito.  A few meters down Real Street, the Abuyog Catholic Church will beseech you for a prayer or two.  Adjacent to the church is the Notre Dame of Abuyog (NDA) managed and administered by the Oblates of Notre Dame.  Another learning institution, the Gabaldon Elementary School is a stone's throw away from NDA.

Moving down to Loyonsawang, the Abuyog Municipal Hall stands proud and have been witness to the administration or misadministration (as the case may be) of different town mayors of Abuyog. Not lost in the shuffle are the Abuyog Community College and the Abuyog South Central School.  These educational institutions have molded numerous Abuyognons and those from the contiguous towns into productive members of our society.  Straddling between Loyonsawang and Nalibunan is The commercial district of Abuyog. You can buy anything in the dry and wet market specially during "tabo" on Wednesdays- from the lowly "bulad" (dried fish), to the luscious, succulent and full of cholesterol "lechon" (roasted pig).  The Bol-anons proudly display their wares from "tsinelas" (flip-flops) to a ready made dress from New York, Cubao.  More business establishments will greet you as you move towards Nalibunan, Tab-ok, Santa Fe and Santa Nino.

This is how we picture Abuyog in our minds.  We know we will not be able to fill up whatever memories, thoughts, descriptions, portrayals or narratives you have about our town.  We would always come up short and wanting because our depiction is subject to our prejudices and personal experiences.
