This very abbreviated report of the 24th's involvement in the abortive assault on Petersburg, June 18, 1864, was located in the Adjutant General's files at the State Archives of Michigan.

Petersburg
June 18, 1864.

On the 18th we charged the enemys inner line of works, but did not succeed in taking them. The regiment went into this charge with 120 men, and lost nearly on third of them in killed and wounded, Lieut and Adjt. Sirel Chilson who was at the time serving on the staff of the Genl. Comdy Division (1st Brig, 4th Div, 5th Corps), was killed in this charge.
